Kathleen Colton was born in Chicago in the last century to working class parents. She spent her childhood and early adult years in the Northwest suburbs. At sixteen, she had a life-altering experience when Jay Miller, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union, spoke at her high school about civil rights and civil liberties. She knew then that a career dealing with constitutional issues was in her future.
During the last two years of law school, Colton obtained a temporary license, and worked part-time in the DuPage County Public Defender’s Office, often attending school two days a week, driving back to Wheaton with her two Weimaraners, and working at The Public Defender's Office three days a week.
She won her first two felony jury trials in her third year of law school, both for the same client, who probably did not fully appreciate that he was in the hands of an inexperienced law student.
Colton spent her first two and a half years as a fully licensed attorney as an Assistant Public Defender in Kane County, Illinois, and left that position in 1991 to become a partner in a law firm in Aurora. In the spring of 1994, with twenty court-appointed files in her hand, she left that office and founded her own firm. Practicing family and criminal law for the first three years, she built her reputation in the criminal defense field, and, since late 1996, has been able to concentrate solely in criminal defense. Colton devotes her free time to gardening, cooking, bird-watching, managing her husband’s rock and roll band and her family. Her office is filled with mementos of her cases, including cards and gifts from clients. The one true gift each one has given her is the opportunity to defend their rights.
